What is the Matrix?

The Cyberhive Matrix is a simple overview supporting end-users and investors when exploring European cybersecurity solutions. The Matrix is based on Cyberhive and open source data, focusing on maturity and European readiness of the solutions during the assessment. ECSO, owner and initiator of Cyberhive, is the independent entity that analyses and evaluates solutions.  The first edition of the Matrix was released on February 2025.

Market Categories present in the next Cyberhive Matrix 2026

The Cyberhive Matrix categories are structured to provide a comprehensive and practical framework for organizing cybersecurity solutions. For the 2026 edition we decided to adopt the new Cybersecurity Taxonomy designed by ECSO and structured on 12 new categories.

Why a new taxonomy?

If we consider the NIST 2 categorisation (Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, Recover, and Govern), which is commonly used to classify cybersecurity solutions based on their features, we have recently observed that most products and services now span multiple functions. In other words, the same solution can fall under more than one function. As you can imagine, if each solution fits into several categories, we start to lose the main purpose of a taxonomy, clarity and consistency. The same issue appears on The Cyberhive, where some solutions are placed under different NIST umbrellas. That’s why we need a new taxonomy!

Why is this taxonomy different?

Like Copernicus’s revolutionary shift from a geocentric to a heliocentric model, our new taxonomy changes the focus of analysis, from cybersecurity theory to the market. In this new approach, each solution is categorized based on the core cyber functionality it provides.

This brings clear advantages:

  • For customers and buyers: greater clarity about the solutions on display and a smoother user experience.
  • For the market: a simplified and more accessible model that can reach a wider audience.
